Radiology is such an exciting specialty. Especially during medical school and residency, you will be confronted with a lot of different types of studies and pathologies. It can be overwhelming if you want to get a structured overview of the field of radiology and its most important aspects. Although there are a growing number of great free online resources, they often don´t provide a comprehensive overview. During my residency, I therefore always had some of the best radiology books at hand. That way, I got a great overview and subsequently could dive into more detail using additional resources.
In this article, I therefore want to share my experience on the best radiology books for residents and medical students to give you an educational edge.
The Best Radiology Textbooks – The Essential Top 5
Core Radiology is my personal #1. It carried me through my board exam last year and reading it felt different than in most of the other textbooks I read. In addition, I had a copy on my desk during the last months of my radiology residency to look up things.
Features of Core Radiology:
- Comprehensive textbook covering the most important diagnostic topics
- Well-selected representative images
- Thoughtful schematics and illustrations
- You´ll even find a joke here and there
- “Everything you need but still easy to read”
Grainger & Allison’s Diagnostic Radiology is long recognized as the standard general reference in the field. The 7th Edition continues to provide complete coverage of all currently available imaging techniques across two volumes, organized by organ and system. An essential reference for trainees and practitioners alike.
Features of Diagnostic Radiology, 7th Edition:
- More than 4,000 high-quality illustrations
- Organ and systems-based organization covering all imaging modalities
- Expanded cardiac imaging section
- Updated to reflect current best practices in radiological diagnosis
Brant & Helms’ Fundamentals of Diagnostic Radiology is now in its fully updated 6th Edition, published September 2024 and selected as a Doody’s Core Title for 2025. It covers all subspecialty areas including neuroradiology, chest, breast, abdominal, musculoskeletal, ultrasound, pediatric imaging, interventional techniques, and nuclear radiology. The new edition includes full-color images, updated content, and interactive online self-assessment tools.
Features of Fundamentals of Diagnostic Radiology, 6th Edition:
- Fully updated 2024 edition — Doody’s Core Title 2025
- Comprehensive system-based overview of imaging, anatomy, and disease processes
- Full-color images throughout
- Interactive image flash cards online for self-assessment
- Includes symptom-oriented information
Chapman & Nakielny’s Aids to Radiological Differential Diagnosis has a somewhat different approach compared to the previously presented books. In this book you will go by imaging findings (such as regional osteopenia). Then this book will provide you with a definition as well as with the most common (but also less common) differential diagnosis for this finding.
Features of Aids to Radiological Differential Diagnosis:
- Finding-based approach
- Rich lists of potential differential diagnoses
- Not too many images but well designed schematics for some findings
- Good resource to start when looking for differentials (good in combination with free online imaging resources)
- Will give you differential diagnoses you may have never heard of
Learning Radiology: Recognizing the Basics is a great start for anyone wanting to understand the basics. In this book you will learn how to read and interpret the most common radiology images. As a medical student, I loved its comprehensive overview, its quizzes and bullet points (take home points). For me, this is the best radiology book for beginners.

What Are the Best Radiology Books?
There are thousands of books out there but I only presented 5!? This is because this article focusses on the best general radiology books. These are comprehensive radiology books for residents and medical students.
Please be aware that there are a lot more great books that delve into the deep of specific areas in radiology. For example, if you want to learn about neuroradiology, Osborn’s Brain* is the best resource in my opinion.
How To Choose the Best Radiology Textbook for Residents?
A radiology textbook may be expensive but a great textbook is worth its price. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you don`t simply buy something that someone like me liked on his blog. Talk to colleagues and have a look into some books to form your own opinion.
As a tip for radiology residents: During many radiology conferences such as RSNA in Chicago or ECR in Vienna, there are publishers presenting the best well-known and great new books. Go to them and have a look into some books. That way you will have the chance to judge the book by more than its cover. And sometimes you may even get a discount.
